AXA deploys COBUNDU™ Space Monitor to enhance workplace effectiveness in its new Brussels HQ

Leading global insurance group AXA recently relocated its Belgian head office to a completely renovated, nearly zero-energy building in the heart of Brussels.

The state-of-the-art environment supports a dynamic activity-based working style that encourages collaboration and innovation. It also uses space more efficiently than a traditional office layout. Instead of individually assigned seating, AXA’s new workplace provides a variety of work zones. Employees can choose a suitable space for activities such as focused work, team collaboration, meetings, phone calls, and socializing. They can also choose where to work based on the people or teams they need nearby.

New way of working

To optimize the new way of working, AXA deployed 1,850 COBUNDU™ sensors to keep track of the use of meeting spaces, desks, and concentration rooms. The objective of deploying the COBUNDU™ Space Monitor:

  1. Validate the new 0.6 desk-to-employee ratio, to ensure the right balance between desk availability and space efficiency
  2. Track and analyse space occupancy on a continuous basis to enhance workplace effectiveness

The sensors were placed in a matter of days and the whole operation was up and running in less than 3 weeks’ time. The set-up provides permanent access to dashboards showing minimum, maximum, and mean occupancy. Managers can easily filter the data and visualize it on floor plans, graphs, and heat maps. MCS Solutions also provides data science support for advanced data modelling and interpretation.

All occupancy data is captured through wireless sensors, using LoRa connectivity and cloud storage. There is no link to AXA’s corporate IT network or sensitive data. AXA is currently also considering to connect the building’s BMS (Building Management System) to the analytics platform, which would enable workplace managers to correlate occupancy and comfort parameters.
